An absolutely incredible antique bone necklace.
An unusual style with large carved bone ovals, hand carved and overlapping and elaborate in style, the Victorian's used bovine or swine bone in jewellery as a popular and more economic alternative to ivory, this particular piece is a definite statement necklace and has been carved from bovine bone.
There is some natural pitting in the bone, some darkened spots and some tiny chips which do not detract and show off its age beautifully.
Leading toward the clasp there are small sections either side carved into bone beads, the clasp is made from brass, an early and slightly primitive hook fitting.
The entire necklace is threaded onto strong cotton and it is in an aged but excellent condition.
The full opened length is 24.5" inches, the largest of the bone ovals comes in at around 2" and these graduate smaller in size towards the clasp.
It weighs an impressive 101 grams!
A beautiful antique statement piece in an uncommon style.
