An incredible Victorian cake or fruit basket, the decoration on this piece is so grand and elaborate it is truly beautiful craftsmanship.
The basket has a single foot, wavy moulded basket with a decorative scrolling rim of foliate design, there are high relief accents on each rise of fruit, flowers and leaves.
The centre inner of the basket has some engraving and the handle has a foliate design to the top centre where there is a small blank cartouche.
A grand and quality piece for the dining table and perfect for that special occasion meal or just a good family get together, it would make a beautiful centrepiece for a wedding also.
It has makers marks but these are hard to make out but it is possibly Richard Hodd, c1850.
The silver plate is in nice condition, it has been very well kept and is lovely and shiny, just a few small surface scratches on the inner bowl.
A traditional gift for Victorian brides, the fruit and foliage symbolising fruitful futures and new beginnings.
Approx 4" height and 12.5" diameter and 7" handle height when raised.
