An absolutely excuisite Victorian mourning capelet / cape / Mantelet.
This decadent and rich inky black mourning piece is a museum worthy piece, so expertly put together from the finest of materials.
It fastens with hook and eye fasteners in the breast plate and has beautiful long decorative silk ties that fall down the length of the Cape, these are not forced to be tied and look nice as is.
It has a large ruffle collar, the collar has different layers of taffeta, silk, satin and lace, at the very back of the collar there is a black silk bow.
The main outer of the cape is made in a silk burnout fabric with an abstract foliate design, it is lightly padded and the interior is lined in a quilted black satin, there are two very small side pockets to the inner front, ideal for a pocket watch etc.
The lacework fringe is absolutely excuisite some of the most pretty and intricate lacework I have seen on a mourning garment and takes on an appearance similar to point de gaze.
The entire piece is in very good antique condition, there is some fading on one of the silk lapel ties and some slight fade on some small areas of lace on the ruffle collar, other than that it is unbelievably good.
It is very old and will require very specialist cleaning, it has not been cleaned by us.
It has come from a prestigious family household and has been in that family until now.
A beautiful piece.
