A Victorian Knights dress sword.
Was the property of Sir James Bain, Lord Provost of Glasgow, Knight of the Thistle, circa 1870. Together with a print of an original painting of the Gentleman wearing the sword.
Sir James Bain was a stockbroker and who served briefly as MP for Whitehaven.
Also a partner in the ironworks at Whitehaven.
He was elected to the town council in 1863, he served as Lord Provost between 1874-1877 and he was knighted in 1877.
It has an 80cm steel blade with some etched floral designs, the tip is worn and some rust pitting evident.
An ornately finished gilt D shaped guard with folding clamshell action and a carved wooden grip.
No makers marks and no scabbard.
A very attractive collectors or display piece with plenty of rich history and provenance.
