On offer is this most collectible antique measuring instrument. It's in good original condition overall, there are light surface tarnish markings here and there but could be cleaned off/ polished if desired. There are a few areas of surface rust around the points as expected with age but this hasn't affected performance and only adds to the aged charm and character of the piece.
What we have here is an antique planimeter (also known as a platometer) which is an instrument for measuring the area of an object. There are various scales printed on and still has such a smooth action after all these years. It really is such a quality made item.
It comes presented in it's original fitted case which has a superb makers stamp for - J. Casartelli of Manchester - 1852 onwards. This particular instrument would date to the late 19th century circa 1880's.
The outside of the box is very tatty and scuffed with the paper covering torn off in areas. It's still sturdy though, with original latch and the interior still looks great.
The instrument itself measures 25cm (9 and 3/4 inches) in length.
A superb rare quality instrument ready to be collected and enjoyed once again.
