The DEAR ONE, here is a Beautiful Example of VICTORIAN MOURNING JEWELRY. The is a Special Victorian Treasure because this LOCKET has a Unique RARE Feature which is a PASTE CROSS on the front of this Natural JET LOCKET. The Victorian Period (1837-1901) was the period of time when QUEEN VICTORIA reigned over ENGLAND. This was a prosperous time for GREAT BRITAIN and this prosperity led to a popular type of Jewelry being created which is called (MOURNING JEWELRY). Most of the Mourning Jewelry was made with a Dark Material such as this one made of Natural BLACK JET. There were Large Deposits of Natural Jet in England and the DEEP BLACK COLOR made it appropriate for using to make Lovely Black Jewelry. This Jewelry was worn during periods of Mourning a DEAR ONE, but the Victorians also wore the Dark Jewelry at anytime for any occasion because they considered it Elegant and Chic. This Beautiful Locket was carved of Natural Jet and the Jeweler attached a Wonderful Silver Tone Metal Paste Cross to the front of the Locket when making it. I see quite a few Simple Black Jet Lockets available for sale but I have never seen one with the CROSS attached as this Locket has. Another Nice Feature of this Locket is that the Back of the Locket was made with a Clear Glass Back and enclosed inside is a Lock of the DEAR ONE,S HAIR. The Hair is displayed to curve out in a Pretty Fan Shape. This Style of Mourning Locket with the Decorative HAIR MEMORIUM DISPLAY inside was Very Popular during this time. This Locket has a simple Hair Design but you will see many more elaborate ones for sale in todays market. These Mourning Lockets are Charming Treasures that tell us all a little bit of History of the people who lived during this Era. This Locket may have been made as a Special Order made to show the Owners FAITH and the CARING and LOVE for the DEAR ONE. Maybe it was the Owners Mother or Daughter who had passed on. The Locket would help to Comfort the Owner in there Time of Loss, to let the Owner still feel as if the DEAR ONE was still with them. This Locket was obviously LOVED and WORN quite a bit and it is in Lovely Condition for its AGE with some normal age related wear and a few Fleabite to the Natural Jet Bail. There is a Close up Photo of the Bail. This in no way detracts from the Beauty of this Locket. The Paste Stones appear to be all Original. The Paste have Darken a Bit but they still have a Subtle Shimmer. The Cross and Locket are not Hallmarked so I cannot say what the Metal Content of the Cross is. It is not unusual to find Unmarked Victorian Jewelry because Assayers did not require marking until the early 1900,s. I have made a Necklace for the Locket with Tiny Antique French Cut Beads. The Beads are made of Silver Toned Metal although I don't know what the Metal Content is. I purchased some Hanks of these French Beads from France and they had the Original Tags on them. If you look at the close up Photo of the Beads you will see they have a Cut into the Bead Design. The Necklace is strung on Strong Multiple Strands of Steel Beading Wire. The Ends of the Wire has 6 Sterling Silver Wire Clamps with 6 Sterling Silver Round Bead Clamp Covers. The Clasp for the Necklace is a Recast Sterling Silver Victorian Shepherds Hook with a Sterling Silver Hammered Oval Connector Piece. The Locket was made with a Large Natural Jet Bail attached and the measurement of the Locket with Bail is 1 hair short of 2,3/4 inches high by 2 hairs over 1,1/4 inches wide. The total Necklace with Locket measurement is approximately 25 inches long. The Inside Necklace measurement is approximately 20 inches long. I offer Generous Layaway Terms to my buyers.
