Simply elegant, this shell cameo captures a picture perfect moment in time with a depiction of a young aristocratic European woman when all was still well with the world before the outbreak of the Great War.
Expertly executed from carnelian shell, the carver has gifted this beauty with refined facial features and a flawless wavy updo. Elegant hoop earrings adorn her ear and a sizeable bead necklace, likely intended to be crafted from coral, ivory or tortoise shell encircle her delicate neck. Her gown gracefully flows from her shoulders and a single pansy corsage decorates her shoulder.
The cameo is bezel set in a 10K yellow gold frame measuring 1-7/8" tall (46.4mm) by 1-3/8" (34.3mm). The cameo bezel itself measures 45.1x33mm and there is a narrow surround with twisted wire accent that completes the frame. Circa early 1900's, the frame is fitted with a brooch pin only. A pendant bail could easily be attached by your local jeweler via laser or standard solder. The advances in laser jewelry repair do not require removal of the cameo. It is fast, secure and jewelers love it! There is a t-hinge yet the clasp is an early locking design. There are no hallmarks but the frame has tested at 10K. The cameo brooch weighs 8.4 grams.
The cameo is in excellent condition. There are no chips or cracks in the shell and the carving itself is crisp and without smoothing. We candled to the light under magnification, we can see a handful of faint internal growth lines between her hair and the frame's edge. These are not cracks but natural lines inherent to all shells. The frame is in excellent condition without bends or other damage. The brooch hinge, pin and locking clasp all appear to be original and are in good working order.
