Looking for a fabulous red coral necklace? Let's make a deal on this historical, antique beauty circa 1900.
Simply the best, this necklace offers over 100 grams of dazzling natural red coral from the North Sea and finished with one of the grandest 14K cannetille clasps with Dutch hallmarks that you will find. The wonder and elegance of blood red coral necklaces fitted with elaborate cannetille gold clasps never fail to enchant and delight. Crafted from now extinct coral beds of the North Sea, this blood red coral variety is generally referenced as Dutch coral and used in jewelry designs particular to succinct villages of Holland.
Freshly strung to perfection, this five strand necklace offers 277 hand carved red coral beads, with the necklace's longest strand measuring 21 inches and the shortest strand measuring 16-3/4". The beads are barrel cut and fairly uniform, with a uniform width of 5.5mm and length of 6.6-8mm. The strands are fitted to the clasp with their original gold rings. This 14K cannetille clasp is indeed a showpiece. It measures 42mm tall (1-5/8") by 28mm (1-1/16") by 10mm thick. It is an extraordinary example of the premium cannetille work done by Zeelander jewelers, a true feat in itself. This clasp also exhibits the quality of the craftsmanship itself as it is aged to perfection with no loss of wirework whatsoever. This engaging necklace weighs 101.6 grams.
This necklace is actually very versatile as it can be worn with the clasp in front, at the side or in back. The strands can be worn neat, side by side, or tousled for a more informal look. All of the beads are perfectly matched in color and quality, with actual hue of the coral a rich tomato red, deeper in hue than the more familiar Sardinian red coral of the Mediterranean but warmer in hue than oxblood coral. The cold waters of the North Sea once supplied a wonderful refuge for their extremely slow growing red coral beds, resulting in extreme density to all Dutch corals. The beads are flawless with smooth surfaces free from natural pits, crevasses or black to brown enzyme markings. The coral's glossy polishing adds the perfect finishing touch for this magical necklace.
The clasp's stair stepped oval design is quite stunning in itself. The front of the clasp is decorated with the traditional and intricate woven wire designs quite similar to embroidery patterns. These designs were hollow and finished with solid gold backs slightly curved to perfection to smoothly glide along the female neckline. The clasp closes with a wide mouth tongue and groove closure which still locks securely today with a distinctive click. The clasp is hallmarked at the center of its backside with an oak leaf with four leaves, the hallmark for 14K 585 gold that was utilized in the Netherlands from 1852-1906. Most likely both the clasp and the beads were crafted in Zeeland around 1880 to 1900.
Beautifully preserved, this one of a kind necklace still has a lot of magic left to give. It has been freshly restrung and is ready to wear without worry. The coral is supple and rich, not cracked or dried out. There are no chips or other damage to any of the beads. The necklace was restrung on red silk with knots between beads, all hand tied without any kinks. The necklace would have originally been strung "neat" without knots.
As well, the clasp is also in excellent condition, with all details in place, no other missing pieces. There are minimal pressure marks to the smoothly finished back side of the clasp but no tears. All of the gold clasp rings are matching and appear to be original to the clasp.
This necklace will be delivered in an elegant presentation case, perfect for gift giving and storage, along with a copy of our easy coral care instructions.
