The glory of natural red coral is a pleasure for the eye, the heart, the soul and your health!

The beauty and wonder of Dutch blood coral necklaces fitted with elaborate gold clasps never fail to enchant and delight. This five strand necklace offers 277 hand carved red coral beads and an expertly crafted 14K yellow gold cannetille clasp. The necklace weighs in at a remarkable 106.7 grams. Be still, my heart.

Circa 1880, this magnificent necklace offers the best of nature combined with Old World craftsmanship. Beautifully preserved, this one of a kind necklace still has a lot of magic left to give. It has been freshly restrung and is ready to wear without worry.

The necklace's longest strand measures 21 inches with the shortest strand at 16-3/4". With so many beads on so many strands, the color, cut and size match of the beads is a wonder in itself. These are barrel cut beads which was the norm of the day for the elaborate coral necklaces favored by the Zeelanders. It was nearby this southwestern region of the Netherlands where once lay the famed Dutch coral beads of the North Sea. While there is very slight variation in bead length, 5.5-7.1mm, the width of each bead is steady at 5.5mm, a factor that adds tremendously to the visual effect of the necklace design.

All of these beads are perfectly matched in color and top quality. The actual hue of the blood coral is a rich tomato red, deeper in hue than the more familiar Sardinian red coral of the Mediterranean but warmer in hue than the oxblood coral varieties of the Mediterranean Sea. When examined under magnification, one might expect to see many natural flaws in beads of this age. Yet, the cold waters of the North Sea supplied a wonderful refuge for the extremely slow growing coral beds that contributed to the extreme density of Dutch corals. These beads are flawless with smooth surfaces that are free from natural pits, crevasses and black to brown enzyme markings. The coral's high gloss polish is absolutely gorgeous.

In addition to top quality natural coral, this necklace offers a spectacular hand crafted 14K yellow gold clasp. Large in size at 42mm tall (1-5/8") by 28mm (1-1/16") by 10mm thick, this clasp is an extraordinary example of the premium cannetille work often incorporated in these old Dutch necklace designs. Crafted in a hollow stair step design, the front of the clasp is decorated with the traditional and intricate woven wire designs. This includes three accent rows around the brightly polished oval clasp and a unique floral design at center. The back of the clasp is flat, designed with a slight curve to fit comfortable along the neckline. The clasp closes with a wide mouth tongue and groove closure that still locks securely with a distinctive click. The clasp is hallmarked at the center of its backside. This stamp symbol is an oak leaf with four leaves, the hallmark for 14K 585 gold that was utilized in the Netherlands from 1852-1906. Most likely both the clasp and the beads were crafted in Zeeland.

The necklace has been beautifully cared for and is wonderfully preserved. The coral is supple and rich, not dried out. There are no chips or cracks or other damage to any of the beads. Even the high gloss polish is completely preserved. The necklace was restrung with knots between beads, all hand tied without any kinks. The necklace would have originally been strung "neat" without knots. But with 277 beads, who wants to take a chance?

The clasp is also in excellent condition, which is very remarkable for a piece of this size and detail. All of the woven wirework is in place and without missing pieces. Often these older clasps are in need of replacement parts, but this clasp is fabulous. There are no dents or tears to the front side. The back side of the clasp exhibits some faint denting as this section is crafted with thinner gold sheets. All of the rings that attach to the clasp are matching and appear to be original to the clasp. Yes, all the many great details of this necklace are all in place and fabulous!

This necklace will be delivered in an elegant presentation case, perfect for gift giving and storage, along with a copy of our easy coral care instructions.
