Two strands of magnificent blood red coral are a natural delight!
This is a beautiful necklace featuring two strands of natural red coral beads ranging from 4.8-6mm and closing with a 14K cabochon clasp. There are a total of 192 beads with the longest strand measuring 20-1/2" and the shorter measuring 19" long, inclusive of clasp. The beads are a uniform round cut with a uniform rich red hue. Most of the beads are in the 5.5mm range. At midline, the beads measure 5.5mm.
The clasp is a round box clasp design measuring 1/2" in diameter (12.7mm). At center is a peg set 5.7mm button cabochon that is perfectly matched in color and size. This clasp is thick and heavy for its size, unlike its modern day counterparts--sigh. The front and sides of the clasp are hand chased with a bark design that gives a starburst effect around the coral. The clasp is hallmarked "585". The necklace weighs 46.6 grams.
Actual hue is a rich red without any white veins or spots. The coral is natural, undyed and untreated. It exhibits excellent light refraction, which it what causes natural coral's color depth to vary slightly from low to bright light. Referenced as blood coral or a medium oxblood coral, this red has just a hint of warmth but is deeper than tomato red. However, it is not the darkest of the oxblood range, which is comprised of a range of 8-10 shades with only very slight differentials.
Our photos were taken in different lighting to give you a better idea of color. Photos with a black background were taken in professional LED lighting and photos with a white background were taken in natural daylight. Online these may appear slightly darker red than actual. We have also included a color wheel photo with this necklace against a Momo coral bead necklace and a rosa coral necklace for color and size. We are always happy to forward additional photos and answer color questions so please do not hesitate to ask.
The beads are eye clean perfect. Under magnification there is slight surface pitting visible on a few beads. As well, when magnified the coral exhibits a beautiful fingerprint or growth plate.
The necklace has been recently restrung on red silk. Its current length is storybook perfect, so it was restrung in antique style without knots to preserve that length. This necklace could be restrung with knots, but due to the number of beads, its length would likely be extended by 2-3 inches, putting it at an odd length for many women. Or, beads could be removed from both strands if knotted so as to retain its current 20-1/2" length. Please inquire for information regarding our custom restringing services.
Mid Century coral necklaces were indeed exquisite creations. This post-war period was a prosperous time and the demand for luxurious hand crafted jewelry was high. Natural gemstones such as Precious coral continued to perpetuate elegance, femininity and glamour. Multi-strand bead necklaces were eye catching and indeed served to multiply the movie star good looks. The corals selected for high end beaded necklaces were top quality. With improved carving equipment, coral beads began to reflect a uniform round cut with a smooth finish and a high polish gloss.
This necklace is in excellent condition. The coral is supple and glossy. The clasp is in excellent working condition and without dents. When magnified, the back side of the gold clasp does exhibit shallow surface scratches from use, just like all pre-owned jewelry. This is not noticeable with the naked eye and can be repolished.
Of course, this lovely necklace will be delivered in an elegant presentation case, perfect for gift giving and storage, along with a copy of our easy coral care instructions.
