Simply extraordinary, this antique enamel snake bracelet is indeed a treasure. Top quality and design, this bracelet is beautifully preserved.
From Germany, circa 1890-1910, you will be amazed by its design, precision, beauty and pristine condition. Hand crafted of 900 Silver in an 8mm wide reticulated mesh coiling design. Intricate enameling in hues of cobalt blue and ivory emulate realistic snake skin scales. From head to tail, the rich cobalt blue and ivory enamel offers engaging detail and contrast. The snake's head measures approximately 1 inch by 1/2" and it is beautifully finished in an ivory enamel base, a symbolic pattern in cobalt blue with red enamel eyes and accents. The snake's open mouth displays a mouthful gnarly silver teeth crafted of silver as well as a silver forked tongue. The serpent's teeth are sharp enough to hold its own tail, magically converting into a stunning bangle bracelet. (We find these teeth to be extraordinary and you will too). The base of the serpent's head is solid 900 silver. All of the enamelwork is completely intact as are the detailed teeth and tongue. It is astonishing that this piece is so well preserved.
The bracelet will conform to fit any size wrist up to an 8.5" wrist, with a variance in wrap based on your wrist size. On a 6-1/4-6-1/2" wrist, the bracelet will rest at about a 30 degree angle, with a total width of approximately 3/4" (with space between the coils). Interestingly, the serpent's teeth are so sharp and detailed that they can hold the serpent tail in its mouth to create a 8.5" bangle bracelet. I love these little magic tricks.
The bracelet weighs 26.2 grams. It is hallmarked "900" for 900/100 silver, along with the "DRGM" stamp, for Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster, the registration mark of the German Reich. This patent protection mark was used in Germany from 1891, all the way through the Allied occupation that ended in 1949.
German silversmiths of the 19th and 20th century created masterpieces second to none. We don't see much 900 silver jewelry items from Germany, with most being 800-835 silver before the jump to Sterling Silver at the turn of the century. As well, the Imperial DRGM patent of Germany will not be found on many silver jewelry items produced. This system was an early patent registration with exclusive rights for a limited time. After the fall of Germany, the DRGM records are thought to have been destroyed. This bracelet is indeed beautiful but it is also a fascinating piece of art history that can be worn and enjoyed without worry.
Why be ordinary? Everything about this bracelet is superb. Its splendid snake motif design, Old World Craftsmanship that has withstood the test of time, and uncanny quality in its fine enameling and preservation. We never tire of being astonished by the quality and precision craftsmanship of German silver jewelry. This is a bracelet destined to charm and enchant everyone--all over again.
It will be delivered in a lovely presentation case, perfect for gift giving and storage.
