From the famed Beverly Hills designer, William Ruser, comes this dramatic 18K oxblood red coral cabochon ring which offers the ultimate in Mid Century elegance. Truly a piece of art history that can be worn and enjoyed, you won't find another of this stellar design and coral quality in such dramatic proportions.
This vintage beauty offers all the glamour and style of a 1960s siren. Think Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Loretta Young, Claudette Colbert, Grace Kelly, Doris Day and Joan Crawford, along with a multitude of major male heartthrobs of the old Hollywood studio set.
Mr. Ruser retired in 1969, but towards the end of his career, he collaborated on many designs with Van Cleef and Arpels. So it is no surprise that upon retirement, his Rodeo Drive boutique was sold to Van Cleef and Arpels, and they still occupy the same Rodeo Drive location today. We estimate the age of this creation to be 1960-1965, the peak of Mid-Century grandeur. Hollywood stars flocked to his boutique, wearing his glamorous jewels both on and off the screen and red carpet. When Elizabeth Taylor's jewelry collection was auctioned by Christie's in 2012, several of her Ruser pieces were among the record setting pieces sold.
Crafted in the commanding Mid-Century Hollywood Regency style, this ring's design, stature, quality and condition are a feast for the eyes. Natural coral cabochons of this variety, proportion and quality have always been rare, but even more so in the last 30 years. This ring is truly a work of art, and irreplicable today. It is even hand signed by Mr. Ruser, himself. Now to the details....
Weighing in at 25 grams, the substantial 18K yellow gold mount and its precious cargo of Mediterranean oxblood coral capture the eye and soul at first glance. A definitive "wow" on anyone's list, this grand ring is not only beautiful, but it is so comfortable to wear. Of course, the size and deep red hue of the coral catches everyone off guard.
The buttery 18K yellow gold mount makes a magnificent backdrop for the oversized blood red coral cabochon. The ring face measures 31mm tall by 21mm wide (just under 1-1/4" by 13/16"). The deep red cabochon itself measures 23.5x15.5mm by 8.5mm thick, with carat weight estimated at 22-23 carats. Without removing the cabochon, we have estimated the gram weight of the cabochon to be 4.5 grams (1 carat = .20 grams), with the 18K gold mount itself at approximately 20 grams. The deep blood red hue of the cabochon is uniform and without white spots or veins. It is free of inherent crevasses or pockets. The cabochon's back side exhibits a single white vein, proof positive to the untrained eye that this cabochon is natural and undyed. There are three small pockets present that once housed the coral's true architect, the sea anemones themselves. The cabochon exhibits a wonderful fingerprint and it is polished to a glossy sheen. The ring elegantly rises off the finger just under 1/2 inch for an astounding display of artistry by both nature and man.
Our camera was unable to capture the actual buttery hue of the gold mount nor the blue red depth of the oxblood coral. No metal partners better than 18K with oxblood coral, although the diverse yellow and deep red tones are the most challenging for the camera lens. Photos were taken in a variety of indoor and outdoor lighting situations. The coral is deep red and not bright or tomato red. Photo 3 has been adjusted to attempt to capture the depth of the coral's hue, and do note that this has diminished the buttery hue of the ring mount. Photo 8 features an emerald green marble background which also appears more grey than actual.
The intricate bark design of the substantial ring mount is masterfully executed, unlike many of the free form bark designs from this period where more gold than precision abounded. The ring is crafted in a high dome design that elegantly rises off the finger over 1/2 inch. Its face is comprised of 21 gold fingers that majestically rise to cradle the cabochon. Each section is perfectly congruent, masterfully measured, with each finger uniquely engraved, one by one. The perfected bark pattern continues along the shoulders and completely around the shank. At the shoulders, the shank measures approximately 1/2", narrowing down to a still substantial 3.5mm. The shank measures at a size 6 US, but due to its domed design, can likely accommodate up to a size 7.5 US. The inside of the shank is hallmarked "18K" and also bears the hand inscribed "RUSER" signature makers mark.
This ring is in superb condition. There is no damage to the cabochon or the ring mount. The proportions of this ring allow it be easily worn on the forefinger, middle finger (an Italian favorite) or ring finger. It is such a comfortable ring to wear as its curves so perfectly match that of the feminine finger. This ring is absolutely timeless.
