It's time to add a bit of glow to your life and and a little something in coral is the perfect remedy for whatever ails you!
This late 19th century is a true charmer. You will love its coral beads and be enchanted by its antique jewel clasp.
The power and beauty of natural coral has been beloved and cherished for thousands of years. Used as ornamentation since the 1st Millennium, the mysterious and sacred powers of coral offered protection to warriors, kept the Evil Eye away, promoted good health and fixed whatever else ailed you.
Pliny the Elder first noted its powers and importance in the Roman-Indian trade and Ancient Romans began using coral to protect their health and to ward off the Evil Eye that lurked around every corner. Strings of coral would be hung around infant and children's beads and especially around their necks to assure protection of their delicate health, a practice that continued throughout the 19th century and into the 20th century. Note early photographs from the 1800's of young children and often times they will be wearing a treasured beaded coral necklace.
This delightful necklace is delicate yet mighty in its beauty and grace. In a nice length of 17 inches, it is a graduated strand of natural coral beads ranging in size from 9.6mm at center down to 4mm at the clasp. Circa 1890-1900, the beads are hand cut in antique style, which is slightly off round, our personal favorite. It is fitted with a gold vermeil clasp that is adorned with an emerald cut 6x2.5mm crystal. This clasp is a solid design measuring 13.5x5.8mm and fitted with a self locking fish hook closure. The necklace weighs 16.5 grams.
The coral is natural and not dyed or treated in any manner. This variety of coral is part of the red coral family but is actually a muted hue of deep salmon. The coral is not a brilliant orange but possesses an earthy undertone. You will see a bit of difference in color between our photos. The coral appears darker than actual in our studio photos with LED lighting. The natural daylight photos are paler than actual hue. This necklace is not dark orange red, rather a salmon.
The bead surfaces are smooth and possess minimal pits on a few beads only visible under magnification. The color is uniform with a few of the smaller beads exhibiting bits of white, paying homage to the beauty of Mother Nature's thumbprint. The beads were carved from ancient corals and likely polished with a heavy cloth or burlap, giving them a soft glowing finish and not the machined high gloss polish we see in modern bead finishes.
These beads absolutely glow against the skin, bringing a radiance to all complexions. The color is fabulous in itself but also easily blends with everything. We have taken photos in a variety of lighting, from LED to natural daylight. The color is not bright orange and just slightly deeper than our neckline photo. We love this classic length!
The necklace is in excellent condition, having just been professionally cleaned and conditioned. Originally strung in traditional antique style without knots, it measured 15 inches. It has been restrung on multiple strands of silk with hand tied knots to avoid kinking. The antique clasp is original to the necklace and it is in excellent condition. It opens and closes securely and the set stone is secure and without chips or cracks. The clasp adds the perfect finishing touch to the antique beauty that is as charming to day as it was over 100 years ago.
This antique treasure is ready for its next debut. It will be delivered in a lovely presentation case, perfect for gift giving and storage, along with a copy of our easy coral care instructions.
