This 14K pink shell cameo pendant is a beauty. Circa 1900-1910, it offers a lovely depiction of a Bacchante maiden carved from the Queen conch shell. And, it has an enhancer bail that attaches to your favorite strand of beads, pearls, even your Omega chain.
The cameo is mounted in a custom bezel with a hand chased surround that absolutely sparkles. The frame itself measures 32mm tall (just over 1-1/4") by 25mm (1"). Including the pendant hook, the gold frame measures 39mm, or 1-1/2". The pendant hook bail accommodates any size chain and attaches easily onto your favorite strand of pearls. (These old hook style bails are so great, we use this design for many of our brooch to pendant conversions.) There are no hallmarks or maker marks, but the frame has tested at 14K-16K and is guaranteed at least 14K. The cameo weighs 7.5 grams.
Both cameo and frame are in excellent condition. The carving is supple and without cracks or chips to the carving, background or back side of the shell. The frame exhibits no dents or tears and the pendant hook is sturdy and non-malleable. This style of pendant hook design was very utilitarian and we still today use this on many of our brooch to pendant conversions. It just allows for so many options.
Of course, the Bacchante maiden, follower of Bacchus, is a cameo carving favorite that we don't often see carved from pink shell. I especially like the scale of this carving. At just over 1" tall, the carving is quite intricate with expert undercutting against both her face and her hair. The maiden's facial features are soft and, of course, grape leaves are intertwined in her hair. She wears a draped stola and the carving details add a lifelike depth to her shoulders and chest.
This delightful cameo is so easy to wear with just about everything and it can quickly transform the simplest chain or strand of pearls, with its hook pendant attachment.
It will be delivered in a lovely presentation case, perfect for gift giving and storage, along with a copy of our easy cameo care instructions.
