Well, hey there Georgy Girl...or, at least that's the tune that came to me as we researched the date on this shell cameo. I am always captivated how these small works of art capture a particular time in history with depictions of the classic modern woman of the Day.
Set in a British 9ct yellow gold frame, this carving is a full face frontal view cameo carving of an attractive mod 1960's lass with a classic bouffant hairdo. The cameo is carved from desirable sardonyx shell.
With portrait cameos most commonly carved in profile, the full face views are the most challenging for any carver to undertaken, the carver has captured a sweet yet sultry young woman with picture perfect hair, looking down in a solemn, yet beguiling pose. Her facial features give her the youthful look of a 20-something young woman. Her smooth necklace adds a graceful formality to her pose. The cameo is set in a custom bezel that is accented with a twisted wire and scalloped surround. This setting is fitted with a pendant bail only and it appears that there was not originally a brooch pin. The 6.5mm split ring bail is large enough to accommodate a variety of chain clasps.
This pendant is an absolute perfect size for a pendant. The entire frame not including the bail measures 1-1/2" (39mm) tall by 1-1/4" (31mm). The cameo is carved with excellent relief, with the woman's youthful beauty carved from the white strata seemingly rising on air above the shadow of the shell's dark layer.
The cameo alone measures 1-3/8" tall (35.75mm) by 1-1/8" wide (28.5mm). From the top edge of the bezel to the tip of her darling nose, the shell measures 3/8" tall. The entire pendant and cameo measures 1/2" thick.
The setting is British in origin and hallmarked "9 375" for 9ct gold, with a Birmingham assay mark (anchor) and letter "P" for 1966. There is a makers mark of MK(J) LTD. The pendant weighs 9.2 grams, fairly significant for a cameo not fitted with a heavy brooch pin, hinge and clasp.
This cameo is in superb condition with the shell supple and glossy. It is free of chips or cracks and the carving details are still crisp as new. The frame is also in excellent condition with no dents, tears or other damage. When candled to the light, the porcelain skin of the young woman absolutely glows. When magnified against light, we see a few minor internal striations when held sideways, but not straight on. These are no cracks or damage, and simply part of the shell growth process.
This 1960's beauty will be delivered in a lovely presentation box, perfect for gift giving and storage, along with a copy of our easy cameo care instructions.
