Really gorgeous illustrated book from 1887, illustrated and arranged by Irene E. Jerome, engraved and printed under the direction of George T. Andrews. It is called "Nature's Hallelujah" and is a collection of poems dedicated to the beauty and wonder of Nature in the Spring Season (April, May and June) by John G. Whittier, Algernon C. Swinburne, Helen Hunt Jackson, Celia Thaxter, Bayard Taylor and others. Each poem has a beautiful illustration made by Irene E. Jerome. This book has 85 pages printed on rectos only.
Irene E. Jerome moved from Cazenovia, NY in 1875 to Chicago, where she spent three months in drawing from casts in the Academy of design. That being her only art education, in 1882 she exhibited eighteen sketches of Colorado scenery which were critically well received. Between 1885 and 1887 she published four illustrated books.
This book is first edition of 1887 and the book is still in print today. This book was probably given as a gift for christmas because it is signed on the first page "For Daniel - A token of appreciation From (I cannot read the signature) - Dec 24th, 1888".
Condition: This book is in good condition considering its age. Most of the pages are in very good condition. The cover shows some usage and one page in the preface section is coming out (Photo 2). There is some water damage on the top part of the spine as seen on the pictures. Other than that, it is still very solid and very pretty. (Click on ZOOM for larger pictures)
