This is a wonderful, early eighteenth century edition of Jansson’s map of Egypt oriented with north to the right. Cairo is named Alcairo, and the area surrounding the city is detailed, including the Pyramids. The detail becomes scarce as you go away from the city; instead there are camels, goats, horses, sheep and Nile crocodiles, one of whom is shown carrying her baby in her mouth. The cartouche features the Pyramids in the background and people of the region surrounding it. Condition is very good considering the age and is professionally framed. I have seen similar maps sell for over $1,200.00.
From the Folio Atlases Published by Gerard Mercator, Jodocus Hondius, Henricus Hondius, Johannes Janssonius and Their Successors. Frame is 28.5" x 24.25" x 1" Map is 18.5" x 22.5" August sale $650.00
