Antique English Burl Walnut
Slipcase Book Box
Cash, Diary, & Address Book
London c.1860

Description:
A wonderful Victorian book box made from Burl Walnut Veneer on top of Coromandel. Box is filled with a bank of three gilt edged leather-bound housekeeping books Cash, Diary, & Visits & Addresses. This example is made from exotic Burl Walnut Veneer overlaid on to Coromandel wood and beautifully brass bound with gothic cast brass straps, with a matching large brass escutcheon to the front which houses the working key. The key opens the heavy reticulated brass clasp to the top. The interior is finished in a deep blue leather lining and the base is sprung .. this would allow the books to be pressed down, the clasp shut and locked creating a tight fitting.

The address book is the only book that was used of the 3 books. The other two books (Cash & Diary) remain blank. But the address book is filled with approximately 100 people and places living in Great Britain as well as people located all over the world. A great many of them are located in India, Canada, and Hong Kong.

One of the many people listed is Major General Sir Lee Oliver Fitzmaurice Stack. (see pic. 5)
(1868 – 19 November 1924) was a British army officer and Governor-General of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan.[1] On 19 November 1924, he was shot and assassinated while driving through.

Their are also many people listed with the last name of Fullerton (see pic. 6), leading us to believe that the owner was somehow related to that family.
