This show stopping Los Ballesteros bracelet is a fine example of his dramatic 'dimple-dot' design. The bracelet is ornately & intricately constructed with overall scrolls in heavy gauge silver, each adorned at the center with a silver ball. Center features a monochromatic Black Tigers Eye hardstone with silvery-white flash. Stone is an oval cabochon cut measuring 32 x 22mms. and weighing an estimated 20 carats. Interior has an approximately 8-inch interior and is completed with a hidden box tongue in groove closure. Closure opens with a push button release and a pin hinge on the other. Bracelet measures 1.84 inches at it's widest point and is marked "TALLERES DE LOS BALLESTEROS, TAXCO, GRO, HECHO EN MEXICO, STERLING 925" with a bell mark numbered 42.
Bracelet is clearly stamped with an early to mid 20th Century Los Ballesteros hallmark as well as other silver quality & origin marks. Talleres de los Ballesteros was established in 1937 in the family's hometown of Iguala and moved to Taxco in 1941. Their foundry still today is regarded as one of Mexico’s finest silver jewelers. Bracelet exquisitely hand-wrought in Sterling Silver and weighs a substantial 95.8 grams, over 3 ounces! Bracelet shows normal surface wear as would be expected from a piece this age. Stone is in very fine condition and upon close inspection reveals no chips, gouges or 'flea bites'. The form of the bracelet is a little out of round with some bends to the shape but nothing that is noticeable when wearing and certainly does not detract from its beauty.
Los Ballesteros is detailed on pages 97 through 99 in Bille Hougart's "The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks". Additional information about Los Ballesteros can also be found on pages 251-253 in Penny Morrill and Carole Berk's book Mexican Silver. This will be an enchanting accessory for your wardrobe and/or an excellent addition to your collection of quality Mexican silver jewelry.
