A Blue-Purple-ish Untreated Iolite gemstone is a Beautiful Alternative Engagement Ring Stone if You're On a Budget.
Iolite gemstone was once known as the Viking compass because it can determine the direction of the sun on overcast days. It is believed that the ship’s navigator would place a piece of Iolite on a pedestal on the ship’s deck. Historians also believe that Iolite helped the Vikings locate the hidden sun.
When well cut, Iolite can display a purplish, violet blue – the richer the blue, the better.
A marquise cut features 58 facets and an elliptical shape with pointed ends. It has been around for centuries, and though it cannot brag the same level of popularity as the princess or round cuts, its traditional, long, narrow shape looks excellent on a ring finger. Because of its long, narrow shape, marquise cuts are often credited for making a finger appear longer and more slender.
Iolite can be light to deep blue, and usually has a purplish tinge to it. Deeper colored stones are more valuable. It is named from the Greek "violet", alluding to the purplish tinge often exhibited by this gemstone.
Transparent to translucent
Iolite is NOT typically treated. This is an attractive selling point for some consumers.
