Tiered, lacquer, sakazuki cups are used to commemorate important events such as birthdays, anniversaries and other significant milestones. The cups are made of wood with lacquer coatings in red and gold. Decoration consists of stylized calligraphy identifying the event the cup was made for: Long life! Set includes its own storage cypress wood box with braided binding cord.
Note: Shallow but dramatic, the sakazuki cup is most formally lifted to the mouth with two hands: one to hold the bottom of the cup and the other to hold it on the side. The sakazuki most typically holds only a few sips.
These splendid vintage sakazuki ceremonial sake cups are made of wood with red lacquer coating on the body and thin gold trim along the lip. Each cup is accented with hand-painted designs in gold paint, stating its provenance. This sakazuki dates from the early to mid Japanese Showa period (1926-1989) or before and was acquired in the historic city of Fukuoka, Japan.
