Silk kurotomesode kimono with red cranes (tsuru) and floral scrolls on inside and outside of proper right and left front panels near hem. Lined with white silk in half of front panels, three-quarters of back panels and sleeve interior. This kimono reveals the enormous skill with which textile artists of the early twentieth century, who employed the free-hand resist-dyeing technique known as yuzen, exploited chemical dyes to produce designs that were precise and detailed yet dramatic and exciting. Here lustrous silk embroidery has also been used to highlight the wings of the birds, while others have been edged with gold.

Kamon (family crest) of paulownia are located center back below collar, and front chest. This is the emblem of the office of the Prime Minister of Japan and the clan of Toyotomi (one of the 16th century rulers and unifiers of Japan). Unique and authentic silk crepe motifs, plain woven, with hand-painted, rice-paste resist outlining (yuzen).

A red crane design on kimono is an auspicious symbol. In Japan, this kimono's yuzen paint was adopted as a symbol of the Imperial household, particularly the empress. These mythical birds represent fire, the sun, justice, obedience, fidelity, and the southern star constellations.

This is a collectors’ item, authentic and unique. Many different factors determine prices. First: age, rarity, and condition. Second: aesthetics. Since in Japan the best kimono have always been considered textile art, kimono prices can vary as much as do prices on paintings. Thus, beautiful and unique kimono command a premium.
