The phoenix design on obi is very rare and is an auspicious symbol. In Japan, Ho-o, the mythical Phoenix was adopted as a symbol of the imperial household, particularly the empress. This mythical bird represents fire, the sun, justice, obedience, fidelity, and the southern star constellations. Mukai-ho-o and the Imperial House chrysanthemum flowers are auspicious motifs of Japanese history.
At one time, even the most magnificent obi in Japan had only one purpose: to tie a kimono. Today, however, people everywhere are discovering the almost unlimited decorative potential of the obi.
