A pair of marvelous 18th century French faience tin enamel de l'est plates. Each has great hand painted decoration that includes insects, and each is 9.5" in diameter. French plates from the 18th century are not easy to find, and this pair is remarkable. There is an old price sticker on the back of one plate from Richard Norton, Inc., which is in the Chicago Merchandise Mart and which was founded in 1933. It looks as though a 0 was torn off the tag, and the original price for the pair was $850.00, a price which before 2008 would have been very fair.
Condition: one of the plates has an old repair (see picture), and both have flaws that are original to them and in the mold (like pitting that was there when these were first made).
Thanks for looking at this French pair!
