Wax-over papier mache doll, 17 inches, with blonde Alice hairstyle and blue glass eyes. Her body looks to be handmade-it was replaced many years ago, as well as her upper arms and legs, which are made of a different fabric than the body. Her lower limbs are in good condition as is her well-shaped shoulderhead and face- some marks and scrapes but in very good condition for this type of doll and age. There has been a little bit of wax added to the tip of her nose. Her right hand had a repair some time ago to replace some fingertips. Her face is simply painted, with one-stroke eyebrows.

Her clothing is delightful- she wears a cotton dress with corded seams, two petticoats and an apron. The dress is possibly original. One of her petticoats has an owner's name on it as well as a trim that I cannot recall the name of.....(shark's teeth?)The petticoat closest to her body is sewn on. Her dress has worn through in some areas where the diamond shaped dots are unprinted: it appears as though the ink acted to protect the fabric from sunlight. A fascinating textile artifact. Wonderful leather boots. Wax-over dolls rarely, if ever, have any markings as to manufacture, but this doll was almost certainly made in Sonneberg, Germany in the mid-to late 1800's.
