French toddler Model 247, 18 inches. This is the model known as "Twirp". Circa the first quarter of the 20th century, with a bisque socket head and original composition ball jointed body. Her character face has blue glass sleep eyes and an open/closed mouth with two molded upper teeth. The hair eyelashes are missing but this is only barely apparent when the eyes are closed. They do not close completely. The back of the neck is incised: S.F.B.J. / 247 / Paris / 8. The head is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There are a few marks in the bisque on the back of the head, incised by the factory. With variations, these are frequently seen in the production of S.F.B.J. heads of the period. This may or may not be her original human hair wig ( curls are slightly unruly) and she has a cork pate that I think is a replacement- may not be original but it fits perfectly. Her body is in excellent condition with repainted hands.
This sweet toddler came to me naked and I have made all her clothing for her including undergarments, from antique and vintage fabrics, laces and ribbons. All buttonholes are hand worked. Her shoes are leather with little pompoms, and replaced laces and allow her to stand for photos but she will be safer on a stand since her feet, characteristic of this model, are highly arched with big toes pointing upward. Vintage cotton socks.
