French Papier mache poupard with painted costume, 9.5 inches. These dolls were sold at street stalls in France in the early 1900’s and possibly earlier. This particular doll is painted more brightly and with more solid areas of color than others I have seen. A primitive socket head, jointed arms, a delightful painted face that looks quizzical. This poupard is in very good condition but for a chip missing from the side of the right foot. It has a tag on left foot from Au Printemps, the famous department store, so I am guessing the market stall where this was sold was on the wide sidewalk outside the store. A great example of the many avenues on which our beloved papier mache dolls have travelled.
