Antique Early Armand Marseille girl, 23.5 inches tall. This doll is remarkable for her poise and self assuredness. She is obviously comfortable in her own body, not shy and with a friendly, open, expectant expression. A bit of intelligence showing, too. She has big brown sleep eyes with most of the wax intact. Feathered brows, 4 teeth, dimpled chin, chubby cheeks, very evenly painted eyelashes. Her head has no cracks, chips or hairlines. Her lower arms are in excellent condition with nicely shaped hands, all fingers present. Human hair wig is likely original but if not, suits her very well. Her leather body shows a lot of play, still solid, but there have been some repairs to her knees. I am not going to remove the well fitting socks and shoes, one of which has a thread loop holding on the closure. The shoes are missing their decoration which may have been bows, easily replaced. No model number and simply marked Armand Marseille Germany.
Oh! the dress! This beautiful chambray dress, in a style of the late 1800's, is made in exactly the method used for an adult’s dress of this style. There is a fitted sleeveless cotton bodice underneath the blouson, which drapes perfectly. The waist is also gathered and sits on her high hip. The sleeves have small ruffles finished with narrow hems and all gathers are covered either inside or out with bias facing or a straight grain facing. While the dress is sewn by tiny machine stitches, all buttonholes are handsewn. The dress is in perfect condition and is an impressive and humbling example of diligence in dressmaking. It also looks wonderful on our girl. Underneath the dress are knickers, fitting well, possibly original, but since the dress was made for her, I could not say what the original clothing was.
The hat worn by this doll in the second photo is listed separately in my shop. Doesn’t she look great in it?
