Vintage artist made International folk art dancing couple depicting Italian people. 7.5 inches tall, base is 3 inches by 3 inches. The amount of inventiveness shown by this artist is truly impressive. The lady is wearing a bubbly polka dot skirt with a lace petticoat, stockings and cloth shoes with leather trim. She has human hair long braids tied up, a felt hat with flower trim, embroidered bodice and and green trim sewn into a ruffle around her waist. The man is wearing corduroy shorts with leather trim, embroidered suspenders, paper collar, human hair and mustache. Cloth hat with colorful leather trim. Socks are made from perhaps looped towelling? I see that there are three pads missing from the base, I have found them and replaced since the photos were taken.
I am posting a collection of these dolls that were made by a German artist in the early to mid 1940’s, whose last name was Brohle. This collection was purchased by an American woman who was in charge of a USO in Germany just after the war ended. The artist’s husband was the driver for the USO. I have acquired this collection and consider it to be a remarkable set of dolls made by a person who appears to have been overqualified. Precision and care, attention to detail, imaginative use of fabrics, sewing and embroidery skills...these are top notch for this type of doll. These were stored away for many years and are in wonderful condition. The clothing is complete; all the ladies are wearing socks, stocking and underwear. Since I acquired them at a good price, I am offering them to you very reasonably- I am sure you will enjoy having at least one of these in your collection and they will also make wonderful gifts.
Shipping charge is approximate. I will refund overcharge. Please take a moment to read my terms of sale.
