Mystery doll in original clothing and bonnet. If this 12.5 inch doll (14.5 inches to top of hat) has markings, they cannot be seen, her mohair wig and straw hat being firmly in place. She has interesting attributes and was purchased in France. There are dolls much like this one illustrated in French Etrennes, (Department Store Christmas catalogs), in 1889, listed as Bébé Ordinaire, or Bébé Nouveau. However, this bisque socket head, in fine condition, open mouth with four teeth and a chin dimple, looks like Sonneberg and could have been exported to be assembled in France. Not what we would call a French Market doll: the eyes are pupil-less glass. She could simply be a German doll. There is a bit of glue excess on her left eye, not easily seen and not a big deal but I need to mention it. She is in very good condition except for her hands, which have paint chipping- the underlying material is pressed wood or composition with a high percentage of wood pulp. Her clothing, wig and hat are entirely original and have never been removed. Her socks fit tightly and here is another interesting feature: the leather shoes are a fancy (French?) detail on what was obviously not intended to be an expensive doll. Her body, to the extent I can see it, is painted composition, but if same as arms I cannot tell. I love the body language here: stiff, poised, formal and a little bit shy. I have added the necklace.
