Vintage artist ethnic doll depicting Chinese people. 7 inches tall, base is 4.5 inches wide by 3.5 inches. Stockinette faces and hands, the two men each have queues made from what I believe is human hair and the lady has an elaborate hairdo. The faces have embroidered details and blushed cheeks.
In the next few weeks I will be posting a collection of these dolls, all depicting people from various countries, that were made by a German artist in the early to mid 1940’s whose last name was Brohle. This collection was purchased by an American woman who was in charge of a USO in Germany just after the war ended. The artist’s husband was the driver for the USO. Through another set of circumstances, I have come into possession of this collection, and I consider it to be a remarkable set of dolls made by a person who appears to have been overqualified to make dolls. Precision and care, attention to detail, imaginative use of fabrics, sewing and embroidery skills...these are top notch for this type of doll. Since I acquired them at a good price, I am offering them to you very reasonably- I am sure you will enjoy having at least one of these in your collection and they will also make wonderful gifts.
