Vintage artist made folk art ethnic International dolls, two dancers depicting an Indian couple, a snake charmer plus a snake. 7 inches tall, base is 4.5 by 3.5 inches. These are stockinette over a wire armature. A couple is watching over a man who is a snake charmer, and what a cute little snake there is, too! So much detail packed into one little spot. Human hair wigs, embroidered features, blushed cheeks, traditional garments in an assortment of colorful fabrics.
In the next few weeks I will be posting a collection of these dolls that were made by a German artist in the early to mid 1940’s, whose last name was Brohle. She may have lived in Munich. This collection was purchased by an American woman who was in charge of a USO in Germany just after the war ended. The artist’s husband was the driver for the USO. Through another set of circumstances, I acquired this collection and I consider it to be a remarkable set of dolls made by a person who appears to have been overqualified to make dolls. Precision and care, attention to detail, imaginative use of fabrics, sewing and embroidery skills...these are top notch for this type of doll. The clothing is complete; all the ladies are wearing socks, stocking and underwear. Since I acquired them at a good price, I am offering them to you very reasonably- I am sure you will enjoy having at least one of these in your collection and they will also make wonderful gifts.
