French Maitrise Walnut Secretaire with Ebony Columns. This is a remarkable piece of miniature craftsmanship and your French ladies will be clamoring to store their quill pins and sealing wax in it. The front of this is made of quarter sawn cross- cut book-matched wood. Look carefully and you will see it; the top door and the bottom doors are all cut from the same piece across the log, and matched in a mirror image. The two doors underneath fit together perfectly so that they firmly shut without a latch. As you can see, there is a full complement of shelves and cubbyholes to suit the most prolific letter writers, and the columns running vertically are of ebony wood. There is a spacious drawer on top. We have the original key to keep it all private if one prefers. I was told this is walnut but that cannot be confirmed or denied by my many friends in the wood business. The front of this is veneer: over time, some of it has curled and lifted ever so slightly. Otherwise this secretaire is in fabulous condition and will be an elegant addition to any display, but especially of French dolls. Measurements are 14.25 inches tall, 9.75 wide, 5.25 inches deep. A beautiful and one of a kind piece, solid and heavy for its size.
