These wonderful Italian drippy girandole earrings are natural coral and gold. The coral is all hand faceted in a diamond pattern. Classic Sicilian / Italian these have large over sized French wires which are so easy to put on.
The Girandoles... Of all of the styles of eighteenth century, the girandole was probably the most desirable for night wear. Its design was classic.. The central carved bar shaped ornament has 3 hand sanded and perfectly matched pendants that dangle. These earrings have fabulous movement and are articulated 4 times. True to girandoles the center pendant hangs longer than the outer pendants. Dating back to the seventeenth century, beautiful examples were made in rose cut diamonds, paste, garnets, etc. Although girandoles were thought to be primarily night time wear jewelry, coral, being a natural material was worn equally for day (called undress), late afternoon (half-dress), or for evening (full dress.)
The earrings are in excellent antique condition with no apologies to be made. They have amazing movement and with the slightest move of the head the swing and become very much alive.
The earrings dangle an impressive 3" from the top of the earwire. One earring weighs 9.20 grams and the other 9.25 for a total of 18.45 grams. The gold is testing for 14+ K.
These are circa 1840, late Georgian. Excellent antique condition and Italian in origin.
To find these earrings in this condition is such a treat. Questions are welcome and encouraged.
