This small gold Fob has a hidden compartment in the back. I believe this was a poison compartment as this was certainly not intended for a photograph.
The padlock shaped piece is made of gold which is testing around 13-14K gold per acid and electronic testing. There are 2 natural pearls and a natural persian turquoise cabochon which are safely collet set. It was hallmarked twice on the outside with a star shape. Inside the bench jeweler engraved 11 inside the main body and on the little door that opens. I am not familiar with its maker.
This may have been worn on a chain or perhaps worn as a charm on a bracelet. It is small and measures 5/8" x 5/8". It weighs 2 grams.
The workmanship on this is beautiful. The top is completely hand etched and decorated. The compartment is flush and nearly impossible to notice. To open the compartment you simply slip your nail under a tiny lip and it opens smoothly.
It is in excellent antique condition with no apologies to be made.
This was purchased in Italy but may be European in origin.
Circa 1860, Victorian era.
What a wonderful little gem to add to your collection. Questions are always welcome and encouraged.
