The Girandoles... Of all of the styles of eighteenth century, the girandole was probably the most desirable for night wear. Its design was classic.. The central bow shaped ornament has three gold and garnet pendants that dangle. These earrings have fabulous movement and are articulated 4 times. True to girandoles the center pendant hangs longer than the outer pendants. Dating back to the seventeenth century, beautiful examples were made in rose cut diamonds, paste, garnets, etc. These are all natural foil backed tested garnets. The stones are single table cut. The gold comes up and around the stones so they will not be lost. Girandoles were produced all over the world and remained fashionable for over a hundred years, possibly because proportion was particularly flattering to the female face.
These absolutely earrings are truly remarkable... Every time I am lucky enough to come across a pair of Girandoles I am always elated. This pair is impressive in condition, size and sheer beauty. They have incredible movement and are articulated once under the main flower cluster and three more times for the dangles. One of my favorite things to see on old jewelry is when the bench jeweler took the time to hand decorate the backs of the earrings. The open scrolled pierce work gives them extra beauty.
They have extra large French earwires which make them very easy to put on and take off. The hinges remain in perfect condition. Both earwires have Italian hallmarks which were used in Sicily during this time period.
They have professionally tested for 15K yellow gold. The earrings are the perfect length in my opinion and measure 2 1/2" from the top of the wire to the bottom of the longest dangle. The measure 1 1/4" across the widest portion under the cluster. One earring weighs 9.79 grams and the other 9.17 for a total of 18.96 grams. These are a really nice weight but not so heavy it weighs the ear down.
Condition is excellent. I see no damage to this pair of earrings at all. They have warm wonderful patina which I have left in place.
15K Yellow gold and red garnets. Italian in origin. These earrings are circa 1780
This is one of the nicest pairs of Georgian girandoles I have had in over 25 years. They are fit for the finest of collections. Questions are always welcome and encouraged.
