These wonderful black-dot paste earrings sparkle like diamonds...
They are large flower clusters with 6 pear shaped 'stones' surrounding a round cut in the center. Many years ago I had a pair similar but not as good I called my (snowflake earrings.) They are very difficult to find, especially this condition and size.
I do not like to change anything original, especially with old Georgian pieces however the wires were tired. I do find it very acceptable to change earwires when necessary. In this case, they were very unsound and ready to come apart. The bench jeweler changed them to wonderful 14K gold shepherd wires which are my personal favorite. Easy to put on and because of their length they do not fall out easily.
The black dots help date these beauties. Small amounts of black enamel and sulfur were mixed and then painted on with tiny horsehair paint brushes. The dot they felt emulated the bottom of the culet. The pastes are all foil backed and remain in excellent condition. These were purchased in Italy but I do believe them to be French in origin.
They are a terrific size and weight. The earrings measure 1" from the top of the wire. They measure 3/4 x 3/4" across the pastes. Each earring weighs exactly 4 grams a piece for a total of 8 grams total weight. The mounts are 800-900 silver per European standard. Wires are 14K yellow gold.
French in origin, circa 1800
