This extra large hand painted brooch is beautiful. This was clearly commissioned by a family with means. The woman has long flowing thick curly hair and is is wearing a beautiful Victorian necklace, earrings and a black velvet ribbon with flowers that match her jewelry. She is wearing what may be a wedding veil.
The brooch is extra large and is quite an impressive size. The mount measures 2 3/8" long x 2" across and is 1/2" thick. The painting was done by an accomplished artist. She was painted on a very high quality porcelain blank. It is pure white. Behind the blank is stamped 26 and the artist name Adelaide Nelson was very neatly written.
The mount has professionally tested for 12K yellow gold. There is lovely gold twisted rope around the edge of the mount. The brooch weighs 22.3 grams. The pin is in perfect working order and catches well on the open C clasp.
The painting is in very good condition. I would say excellent however under 10X magnification there are a few very tiny scratches near her chin. It is extremely exaggerated in these photos. Even though it is extremely difficult to notice, it can easily be touched up if the new owner chooses to do so. Also, there are 3 very small drops of solder on the top side near where the twisted gold rope is. The solder was added in antiquity and I believe which was done at least 80-100 years ago. I believe the owner had her jeweler just reinforce the mount as she is quite heavy. I personally do not feel it distracts in the least.
I purchased this in the UK and believe it is English in Origin.
She is Victorian, Circa 1880
I have certainly seen my share of miniature portrait paintings but she is just gorgeous. She is just an absolutely beautiful woman. She will look wonderful on a lapel or jacket. Questions are welcome and always encouraged.
