Sensational Glitzy Sterling Silver and Paste Snake Collar / Necklace ~ Art Deco Period
I must admit, when I received this snake I nearly came out of my boots! He is one of the most amazing snakes I've yet to see. The workmanship is absolutely over-the-top Fabulous! He is so three dimensional and realistic...
He is simply beautiful and has green paste cabochon eyes that look like little emeralds.. His entire head has fine raised mille grain detail around his eyes and all over his head to emulate snake scales. All of the pastes are bead set so they will not fall out.. That was a job that took jewelers a great deal of time. They used a special tool and created each and every place a crystal was to be placed, turned it clockwise and that would open up little pieces of the silver where he could later go back and hand close them with another tool. Far superior to glued in stones which I personally do not buy. His collar is stunning. There are 4 pastes on each bar then a separation where it is flexible between each and every link. They are pave or channel set. I have taken a photo with him wrapped around my hand to give you a feel for just how beautiful the movement of this guy is.
He measures 3/4" at the widest portion in the front, where head and tail are. The the entire chain is 3/8" wide. The necklace is 16" measuring on the inside when he is closed. He weighs 32.3 grams, 4 grams over an ounce.... He has a double safety. The tongue in groove clasp snaps into place perfectly and there is a secondary locking clasp so he will not fall off or be lost.
Hi has professionally tested for sterling silver. He is well hallmarked however a bit difficult to make out. I read it as JR SM 138528.
The quality of this necklace is simply second to none. He looks like a diamonds collar necklace. I happen to adore snake jewelry and buy every ring, bracelet, earrings or necklace I can find. I will say, for this period, he is the best I've had.
He is circa 1915 sitting directly on the Edwardian / Art Deco period.
Pristine condition with no apologies to be made.
Purchased out of the UK however I believe he may be American made. (More research to be added)
Once you have this guy in your hands you will understand his quality. Difficult to describe but he is fabulous, a true treasure. Questions are always welcome and encouraged..
