Fantastic Navajo Native American Turquoise and Silver Needlepoint Cluster Earrings ~ Vintage Master Silversmith Begay
I am pleased to be able to offer these sensational earrings. Hands down they are the finest pair of Navajo earrings I have had to offer.. They are big, bold and simply stunning.. These were handcrafted by The Master Silversmith of Navajo jewelry, Mr. Larry Moses Begay.. Not only was he a master silversmith, he is also an Expert Lapidarist. (*A lapidarist is an expert on precious stones and the art of cutting and engraving them - a person with special knowledge or ability who performs skillfully - lapidary expert - a person with special knowledge or ability who performs skillfully) * Definition from internet reference..
They were made and signed by the renowned artist Larry Moses Begay. He was a Navajo Native American Indian known for his beautiful craftsmanship.. He expertly crafted some of the finest cluster or petit point jewelry ever made by those in the trade.. When I Google him I can see the common thread in his work. was Nearly all of his pieces were large, wonderful and made to impress..
All of the natural turquoise was carefully hand selected. He went on to produce these spectacular earrings. The sheer size and workmanship of these is utterly fabulous.. Every single piece of turquoise was hand sanded and then was individually set in a fancy collet crimped mount.. This will ensure that the stones do not fall out. The largest piece of turquoise in the bottom portion has a twisted rope design around the fancy bezel.. The same twisted rope design also encircles the top round piece of turquoise. This was Mr. Begay's signature style from what I am seeing on Google images. They are articulated below the top portion and have fantastic movement! Every single detail was well thought out and the end result is pure beauty..
Mr. Begay signed these earrings LMB and Sterling.. Some of his bracelets have commanded thousands of dollars at auction... All of his information is easy to find online.. The earrings are in pristine condition with no apologies to be made. The earwires were replaced to good quality shepard wires. I find replacing old tired wires very acceptable and they will easily last another century….
They dangle exactly 3" long from the top of the wire. The measure just a hair under 1 1/2" across the widest portion of the bottom dangle.
One earring weighs 11.7 grams and the second, 11.4 grams. They are a great weight. Although they are big and impressive, they are not so heavy that they will pull on the earlobe.
Made in the Midwest, USA..
Please take a moment to Google Navajo Jewelry made by LMB, Navajo Native American Indian jewelry.. He was so instrumental and his wonderful jewelry is rarely let out of personal collections.. He was from the Southwest and was well recognized for his Squash Blossom Necklaces, Cuff bracelets, bangles, watch bands, Bolo ties, etc.. In several articles I easily found on Google, he is listed in the top 10 Native American Indian jewelry artists of all time... His style is easy to spot.. The quality of his pieces are second to none..
The 2 last photos came from a magazine I purchased many years ago. It is called Arizona Highways. Date August * 1954
I have looked at hundreds of pieces of jewelry he has made. Most are in private collections but thankfully owners share their beautiful jewelry with others online. I cannot find a pair of earrings that he made that compare to these.. They are impressive in every single way and are fit for the finest of collections.. Questions are always welcome and encouraged.
