Cupid is the Roman god of carnal love, the son of Venus, commonly represented as a winged, naked infant boy with a bow and arrows.....
The detail on this piece is outstanding. The little naked Cupid sits with his bow in his hand and his feather arrows directly behind him. He is winged and the he is extremely three dimensional. He has gorgeous curly locks and is surrounded by flowers. His arrows are safely tucked behind him waiting for his next (love target.) There is wonderful warm patina which has settled into the low lying areas.
He is such an extra large piece and I have photographed him in hand to give you a feel for just how large he is. He measures just a hair under 3" The piece is substantial and weighs 54 grams. Weighing in at almost 2 ounces He has to be worn on a heavy jacket or sweater because of his weight. He cannot be worn on a lightweight top or he Will fall forward.. He looks Gorgeous on a black lapel!
This has professionally tested for silver, European standard, 800 or 900.
Circa 1900 Victorian period and So Nouveau!
The condition is excellent antique condition with no apologies to be made.
The piece is not signed however it is likely European.
Because of his grand size, any experienced bench jeweler could easily add a retractable bail. Once the bail is added, he can become a pendant and easily worn on a black antique ribbon as a necklace.
This is simply fabulous. If you're a romantic at heart this may be for you. Also, what an amazing gift this would make for your loved one. Questions are always welcome and encouraged.
Please note: The patina is much warmer than when I took the pictures. The dealer that had it prior to me polished... But, the patina is coming back and it is grand!
