A Hallmarked French convertible Dress Clip with removable tines to convert into a pendant... The piece is impressive in size, condition and all materials used to make this. The bench jeweler created a jewel to be loved, coveted and adorned for life.. Can it get much better? From my experience, antique crowns are nearly impossible to find.. I have had 4 total over 19+ years but not a single one like this.. The only word that comes to mind is 'Exquisite.'
A large, oversized piece of clear quartz crystal was sanded into a perfect puffy heart. The heart is adorned with a row of pave set diamonds across the top and beautiful pearls with tons of creamy luster. I will state these are cultured pearls as I have not sent this to EGL to be x/rayed but the owner could be in for a surprise. The quality of this piece might have demanded natural but again, I make no claims.. A white gold spiderweb is spread across its face. 2 very clean white round brilliant diamonds are collet-set in its web.. It must have been the bench jeweler's idea to use diamonds in the place of actual spiders.. What a Fantastic idea! Some women simply do not like to see crawling spiders but, who would not like to see white brilliant diamonds in its place?
Tested natural rock crystal.. This is the same quartz that was used to make the ever so popular 'pools of light' necklaces. Quartz crystals have been used for centuries to make fine jewels... There are 8 small but sparkly pave, prong set diamonds in the top of the crown. Each is approximately 2 x 2 x 2.5 mm's deep which equates to about 8 points for a total of 64 points. The 2 diamonds in the web are larger. Each measures approximately 2.5 x 2.5 x 3 mm's deep. Each are approximately 15 points for a total of 30. TDW would be approx. 94 points or just shy of a carat. Please remember, without taking gems out of their settings, these can only be approximated however, I always measure on the conservative side..
The metal is tested and hallmarked 18K white gold.. A note on white gold... . A very wise dealer friend of mine told me years ago this... "Donna, there is no such thing as white gold" I thought about that for a while but the answer came later that day. All gold out of the earth is yellow. It is the alloys added that makes it white. Generally nickel is the alloy bench jewelers added/add to create the 'White Gold.'
A Perfect dozen pearls, 12. All have the same luxurious luster, all are the same size. Each pearl measures 4 mm's.
To remove the double sharp tines you unlock a safety on the top right upper side. Then, you gently pull the tine on the far left out of it's catch. The bale is a nice size. I am showing it on a vintage silver Belcher chain. It has a small loop link. It is not perfect and I use it on occasion to show items but I would be happy to include it with the sale if you would like it. Otherwise, an antique ribbon or cord will do the trick.. Wear it on your finest black dress in the V portion or wear it on a ribbon. Either way it will impress..
The hallmark was hard to find but with persistence I have been able to locate it on my favorite site for this task.. The Online Encyclopedia of Hallmarks.. On the removable clip portion there is a single hallmark inside of a cartouche. It is a French rhinoceros which indicates 750 or 18K white gold.. This hallmark is very small and I was not able to get a clear photo but I assure you it is as stated..
Circa 1910, sitting directly on the Edwardian / Art Deco Border.
Steeped in Symbolism... The heart is always the symbol of love.. The crown above the heart symbolizes, ruler of one's heart. The spider web has many meanings but well recognized and observed is the symbol of wisdom..
Pristine condition.. The only apology would be that one of the tines is just a bit off. I can actually have my bench jeweler straighten it out if I have time prior to the sale.
The piece is hefty and weighs 16.2 grams. It measures 2" x 1 1/8" across.
A gem to behold.. Questions are always welcome and encouraged.
Please Note: Tomorrow I will get a clear picture of the French hallmark.. I have a friend who owns a better camera than mine. He will come and get a quick shot of this tiny hallmark and I will add it. Thank you for your patience.
