Really, I've never seen anything like this before. It is an antique unfinished agate piece that was ready to be set by a bench jeweler. He never finished his mount after he selected all of these beautiful pieces of natural agate and chalcedony. An unfinished blank of sorts.. This panel or plaque is made up of beautiful green moss and banded agates. In the very center there is a gumdrop style Cabochon which is yellow Chalcedony. The entire piece was hand made, sanded and has a beautiful scalloped edge. I believe that the back portion is a fossilized granite.
The piece is in Excellent condition. When you look at the yellow Chalcedony from the side, you can see some natural lines at the base. This is not damage. It came out of the earth that way. It is all finely sanded and very smooth.
It is a nice size and measures 1 5/8" across. I am unsure why the piece was not finished off however a simple bale could be added and this would make a stunning (and highly unusual necklace.) Or, a pin back could be added and it can be worn as a pin on your favorite hat, or perhaps a brooch.
Victorian, Circa 1880, excellent antique condition.
If you collect unique or rare Scottish pieces, this may just be the piece for you. Or, if you happen to be an artisan, perhaps you can create your own beautiful mount and it can become a one of a kind antique piece with your own special flare.. I happen to think it is wonderful! Questions are always welcome and encouraged.
