Of all the styles of eighteenth century earrings, the girandole was probably the most desirable for night wear. Its design was classic: a central bow, or in this case the fancy mount holding the sideways marquise ornament from which were suspended by three pear-shaped pendants. The middle pendant was usually largest. Dating back to the seventeenth century when beautiful examples were made in rose cut diamonds, the girandole remained fashionable for over a hundred years, possibly because the proportion was particularly flattering to the female face. During the eighteenth C. girandoles were produced all over Europe in every conceivable material... ****
These are simply spectacular... Georgian Girandoles are highly coveted. Most were paste or rock crystal. These are natural coral which have 18K yellow gold mounts. They are day/night earrings and the tops are a wonderfully large size. The wires are French opening and large so they go on extremely easily..
These were purchased in Italy which is where they were made. They have Italian hallmarks on the gold wires. They are extremely difficult to photograph but definitely Italian. The top round piece of coral is hand faceted which I have not seen before. Also the large marquise piece of coral is also faceted. The three dangles are smooth cabochons. They are completely original and in pristine condition. The earrings are a wonderful size. When the top portion is attached they dangle 2 3/4" from the top of the wire to the bottom of the center dangle. Measuring across the marquise portion, they measure 1 full inch across. The top portion alone dangles 1 1/8". Across the fancy twisted gold mount they measure 5/8" x 5/8". The earrings weigh 6.3 grams each, exactly for a total weight of 12.6 grams. The tops weigh 2.2 grams each for a total of 4.4 grams total..
They have professionally tested for 18K+ yellow gold. All of the coral is original to these earrings. The mounts are sensational! The twisted gold surrounding the coral which is safely bezel set. The bench jeweler fancy crimped the large faceted marquise stone and the 6 cabs.
The condition is simply remarkable. They are in pristine condition with no apologies to be made. The wires are perfect! It sincerely is as if these have been tucked in a drawer or jewelry box for over 200 years.
These are Italian in origin, circa 1780, Georgian period.
They are absolutely remarkable. Please take a moment to enlarge the photos. Take notice of the wonderful facets on the coral.. Truly delightful! Questions are always welcome and encouraged.
