Impressive in every single way.. This is large, beautiful, stunning and a classy piece that is so unusual..
The extremely large piece of agate, deep black has uniformed white and black bands. The silver mount is wonderful. The bail has open filigree work and attaches to the highly decorated dangling pendant. At first glance, the silver work is so intricate and beautiful that it appears to be glittering paste or cut steel work. It is not, it is simply a fabulous bench jeweler's outstanding creation.. The mount is wonderful with its open filigree work, hand made flowers and a cascading waterfall effect with hand applied balls of silver....
The piece was purchased in England just last month. I do not however believe it is English in Origin. The back of the bail is Hallmarked 80. The Agate is safely bezel set and is tight in the setting. The pendant dangles just a hair under 3" long.. 2 7/8" to be exact x just a hair under 1 3/4" across.
Circa 1880, Victorian.. The 80 likely indicates 800 Silver, a European standard for Silver for the period. Excellent Antique condition. Measurements above. This weighs 15 grams on the dot. Translucent when held to the light. Extra Large in size this looks Beautiful on a simple piece of black cord, perhaps a piece of white ribbon or a sterling silver chain.
I happen to be very fond of this piece. Questions are always welcome and encouraged.
