Antique Georgian 18K Gold and Natural Pearl Poissarde Hoop Earrings ~ Circa 1800
Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful.... I have had a few pair of French Poissarde earrings over the years. They are incredibly difficult to find. The Antique Jewelry University describes them as "A type of earring worn around 1800 and is of an elongated geometrical design, often 2 or 3 ornaments below each other and sometimes set with gemstones. The ear wires had a typical s-shaped cross over, although it is not certain which the criteria are for a pair of earrings to be called poissardes. The name is derived from the fish selling market women of Paris who played a significant role during the French revolution."
This pair has natural pearls on either side of the zigzag hand etched design which runs down the center of the earrings. These were purchased in Italy and are in fact Italian in origin. They are unmarked but professionally test for 18K Yellow gold with acid and electronically.
The earrings have French opening backs and they close perfectly. They measure 1 1/2 (when measuring around the curvature.) They dangle 1 1/4" from the top of the wire.... Just perfecto.. Each earring weighs exactly 1.8 grams for a total of 3.8 grams. What an expert bench jeweler as when he added pearls, how did he get this weight exact on both earrings? True master jeweler is what I think.
Italian in Origin, Circa 1800, Mint Condition with no apologies to be made. Questions are always welcome and encouraged.
