This is the finest Watch Key I have owned, no question... This extra large key has the most beautiful Mother of Pearl on one side and the finest example of nearly all RED (Very Rare) bloodstone on the other. The key is hinged on both sides which allows the key portion and the top bail portion to move freely in both directions. Also, the oversized bail swivels all the way around and can easily be flipped one way or the other. Both hinges and the bail have extremely fine and fluid movement. The MOP side is beautiful and there are hand etched stars covering the entire surface. There are 1 small dot where the artist drilled a tiny bit deep. It is right in the center of the star and thus, original to the piece. It is far more apparent in these enlarged photos than in hand. The opposite side is smooth and pristine. The key measures just a hair under 2 3/4" x 1 1/4" with the bail. Both the MOP and the bloodstone measure 1 1/8" x 1". The piece weighs 14.9 grams. The puffy repousse work is impressive. The Sterling Silver was polished by the dealer I purchased it from however in time the warm patina will return.
The hallmarks are Dutch and can be found on the On-line Encyclopedia of Silver Marks. The sword mark appears twice on the side of the key and there is an additional hallmark at the top of the bail which I am 99% sure says AG 99. This would date this key 1835, Late Georgian, Early Victorian.
Other than the 1 very tiny area I mentioned above on the MOP there is only 1 pin point size indentation at 1 O'Clock on the MOP side on the bezel. No other apologies to be made. A fascinating key which can be worn on a chain as as a pendant, necklace or added to your finest watch chain. Most certainly fit for the finest of collections. Questions are always welcome.
