Really this is the most rare and unusual hair comb I've had. Two Leopard heads are connected with a ring in one of their mouths. The detail is unreal and is hand etched and decorated silver work on both sides, fabulous... On the front side, there are 4 large cushion cut pastes which are collet set. The growling Leopard's are facing straight up in the air. On the reverse side which is every bit as detailed is the back of their heads.
It measures 4 1/2" long. Across the 2 leopards measure just a hair under 1." Each of the 4 pastes are 1/4" x 1/4". This has no markings however it is early Victorian, Circa 1850 and made of 800-900 silver. This sits right on the Georgian / Victorian border and may be earlier than stated. Very Very good condition. It looks like it had one small solder on the back of the piece perhaps 100+ years ago. It does not distract in the least. Also at the top of paste number 2, there is a tiny split in the silver at the top of the collet setting, it is still secure and these photo's make it look 10 times larger. It is beautiful in hand. It is European in Origin however I am unsure of the Country as it is so unusual I cannot find anything similar in any book or internet reference. It weighs 9.8 grams. What a piece! Absolutely without question fit for the finest of collections... Questions are always welcome.
