The Bambara people of Mali (also in Guinea, Burkina Faso and Senegal) are among the most gifted creators of African sculpture. This masterfully rendered Bambara Chiwara Helmet is 38 inches tall and is adorned with cowrie shells, rustic paint and some beadwork (missing one earring). Hand carved of wood, it celebrates Chiwara, the mythical half-man, half-antelope deity who taught agriculture to the Bambara people. Wear is consistent with age and use.
