This vintage pendant necklace is a hei-tiki, a Maori symbol of fertility and luck. It is carved from the traditional greenstone, or pounamu, a form of nephrite jade found only in New Zealand and used in Maori culture to create taonga, or treasures. Pounamu taonga are believed to increase in mana (prestige) as they pass from one generation to another, and are often given as gifts to seal important agreements. Hand-carved greenstone pendant measures approx. 1.25" x 1" (3.7cm x 2.7cm). Fine gold-plated link chain measures approx. 20" (51cm), is stamped on spring ring clasp: AUREA GERMANY. Some residue, as from a sticker, on back of pendant; otherwise in excellent vintage condition.
